Minutes of the Meeting of Council - Pertaining to the Vogt house
November 5, 2001

Mayor Stough stated that Council will now consider agenda item 7.

Mayor Stough reported that the Vogt house at 5362 Main Street has been sold to St. Joseph Church, and the parish plans to demolish the house and expand its operations on the land.  Since the house is thought to be part of the Underground Railroad network, he said the City is hoping that the house will be preserved.  He has requested the church to hold off demolition until the house can be documented, and to consider preserving part or all of the house as long as it does not interfere with the construction plans.  Many people were in the audience and the majority of them were against the demolition of the house.  Some parish members present said the church should be allowed to expand on the land  that it now owns.

Mr. Billis asked to be excused and Mrs. Scheidel presented proposed Resolution No. 28-2001, a
written copy of same having been previously furnished to each member of Council, “A Resolution of the Council of the City of Sylvania supporting the preservation of the Lathrop/Vogt house, 5362 S. Main St., Sylvania, Ohio; and declaring an emergency.”  Mrs. Scheidel moved, Mr. Haddad seconded, that Council dispense with the Second and Third Readings of said Resolution; roll call vote being: Haddad, Kriner, Scheidel, Sears, Young, Backus (6) yeas; (0) nays.  The motion carried.

Mrs. Scheidel moved, Mrs. Young seconded, that Resolution No. 28-2001 be enacted as an
emergency measure as declared therein; roll call vote being: Kriner, Scheidel, Sears, Young, Backus, Haddad (6) yeas; (0) nays.  The motion carried.
