Return to: The Historic Lathrop House

The following update appeared in the June 30, 2002 bulletin for St. Joseph Church.

Below are Fr. Wurzel's comments, From the Pastor's Desk, that are in the St. Joseph's church bulletin for June 30.

I have received phone calls and e-mail about what appears to be misinformation being presented in the bulletin.

Let me know your thoughts on the information or misinformation and how we can best clarify and present the proper information.

I found it helpful to have the definition of "conundrum" from http://www.yourdictionary.com

co.nun.drum
Pronunciation: k&-'n&n-dr&m
Function: noun
1 : a riddle whose answer is or involves a pun
2 a : a question or problem having only a conjectural answer b : an intricate and difficult problem

Which definition do you think Fr. Wurzel meant? 1a, 2a or 2b?

Tom

From the Pastor's Desk

July 4, 2002

Thursday is the Fourth of July holiday. It traditionally puts us half way through the summer as it marks the celebration of our  nation's independence. I hope this year's 4th will be a real celebration for you and your family. May it be safe and relaxing. We will have a 9 a.m. Mass on the Fourth to offer thanks for our American freedom and as a prayer that we continue to help preserve that freedom in the face of today's challenges. Happy 4th of July!

Summer Conundrums

Here are some things to ponder. I certainly do.

When I met with the Mayor of Sylvania in November, shortly after the Parish had purchased the Vogt house, he told me that the city did not want the house, would not put any city money into it, that he personally would like to see the house stay where it is, but would support the Parish's right to develop the property according to its long range plans. Then recently, the Mayor is invited to speak to area Boy Scout leaders in a meeting at Olivet Lutheran Church and proceeds to make derogatory remarks about the Parish and its plans. What's that all about?

A City Councilwoman (and former parishioner) has told me on two occasions that anti-Catholicism is growing in Sylvania. Over a parish's plans to build for its future? What's that all about?

Around Festirama, we asked the interested parties to sign an agreement for which there had been verbal consent over the moving and relocation of the Vogt house. Here it is the end of June and we still don’t have a signature. What's that all about?

Patience does wear thin in the summer heat. We have been very patient, very cooperative, very low-keyed publicity-wise. However, maybe it's time to vent some of the frustrations that build up. I must admit, these events have given me a sharper focus on the eventual outcome of this continuing saga.

Stay tuned.

Remember

Our 125th anniversary was four years ago. That was the anniversary of St. Joseph’s Parish as a parish.

Our Catholic presence in Sylvania dates back at least to the year 1855 – that's approaching 160 years of serving residents in this community. Some records would make it closer to 165. When was the Civil War? On this 4th of July, we would do well to remember those who have preceded us here in Sylvania and paved the way for our present beautiful parish community. Our history demonstrates that we also have been pretty good citizens of the wider community!
