To the Editor:
Thank you for your article on the Vogt House. When I moved into Sylvania in 1969, I was only twelve, but I immediately admired this home. Through the years, I watched Sylvania's face change from a sleepy village to the vibrant city I'm so proud of today. The Vogt House IS Sylvania. It has observed Sylvania grow from a small train stop with a handful of family businesses to a bedroom community that now boasts among other attributes, its own Historical Village, Lourdes College, Harroun and Olander Parks and soon Fossil Park!
The Vogt House is part of this heritage. It should be considered the jewel in Sylvania’s historical crown. That “bricked-up wall” that attracted Marie Vogt's curiosity needs to be explored so it can speak up and tell us the truth about Sylvania’s involvement in the Underground Railroad.
Too often we throw things aside that we feel have no use for us, only to wish later that we could take back our actions. I can't imagine anyone willing to gamble with this remaining significant piece of Sylvania’s history without first verifying the rumors that have existed for over 150 years! Whoever Mrs. Vogt sells the property to; my hope is that they will keep it intact for all generations of Sylvanians to admire.
