Citizens march in support of the Vogt House
Sunday, local residents rallied in front of the Vogt House, adjacent
to
Harroun Park, to draw awareness to the rumored plans to demolish
the local
landmark across from St. Joseph's Church.
The Vogt House, legend to be part of the local Underground Railroad,
is
scheduled for demolition as early as Thursday to become a parking
lot for
the church.
Called for comment, Bonita Scheidel, city councilwoman and a member
of the
Historical Commission responded, ³With the future so uncertain,
how can we
kill the past for a parking lot?² Scheidel said she has not
heard from the
church.
Gaye Gindy, local historian, said the Vogt House has been long rumored
to be
part of the Underground Railroad, and has always been a landmark
for the
community.
Church officials could not be reached as of deadline.
