"Futuristic" Lah De Dahs Blast Frogs
Dearborn, MI - In a sign of things to come, the Lah De Dahs of Greenfield Village, an 1867 base ball club, ran all over the Great Black Swamp Frogs in a match played by the rules of 1867 on Saturday, August 20. The Lah De Dahs, utilizing the futuristic concept of "stealing" a base even when there is no muff by the catcher, frequently advanced on the base paths, despite the best efforts of the Frogs' behinds. The Frogs were unable to adapt to this rule, and were therefore took a much slower path around the bases. Among the bright points for the Frogs was a "home run" by "Hoot" Sarosh in the first inning which also allowed his brother "Cyclone" to score. Reported by Rick Fuchs, August 22nd, 2011

Frogs Split a Pair Again, This Time in Chargrin Falls
Chagrin Falls, OH - The Great Black Swamp Frogs traveled to Chagrin Falls, Ohio, for a pair of matches against the Forest City Base Ball Club. Unsound defense again haunted the Frogs in the opening game as the Forest Citys prevailed by a score of 8 to 5. The second game was played by the rules of 1867, when balls caught on the bound in fair territory were no longer considered an out. The Forest City Club raced to an early lead, talleying five times in each of the first two innings in building up a double-digit lead over the boys from Sylvania. The Frogs bats awoke in the second inning, narrowing the gap to ten to four. Eight aces in the fifth inning put the Frogs ahead for good, and they held on to beat the Forest Citys by a score of 14 to 13. Reported by Rick Fuchs, August 11th, 2011

Frogs Finish Mayor's Cup With Winning Record
Upper Sandusky, OH - High daily temperatures were not enough to deter the local ballists, as the Frogs played three seven-inning matches on Saturday on the first day of the Mayor's Cup Tournamenent in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. In the opener, the Frogs lost a close one to the Cincinnati Buckeyes by a score of 6 to 5. The Frogs then recovered to score 7 tallies to only 3 for the 1869 Red Stockings. A three-run, "walk-off" home run by Darius "Hoot" Sarosh capped a Frogs' comeback in the final match of the day, as the Frogs topped the Mansfield Independents by a score of 7 to 6. After the day's matches, a fine dinner was provided by the host club, the Wyandot Ghost Riders Base Ball Club. Sunday's matches were determined by teams' records from Day 1. The Frogs, Buckeyes, and Independents had identical records of 2 wins and 1 loss, and therefore were placed in the same pool on Day 2. In the first match of the day, the Buckeyes topped the Independents in a close match. The Frogs then opened against the Buckeyes for the second cosecutive day, but showed little defensive aptitude in the rematch. The final score showed the Buckeyes doubling up the Frogs 18 to 9 in nine innings. After the lopsided defeat to the Buckeyes, the Frogs flashed superior defensive skills and rebounded to shut out the Independents by a score of 2 to 0 in a seven-inning match. First Match of 2011 Cancelled Due to Rain
Fremont, OH - The persistent rains in Northwest Ohio caused Spiegel Grove to live up to its name. The estate of President Hayes was named for the large puddles of rainwater that collected under the trees following a storm. "Spiegel" is the German word for "mirror", and an appropriate way to refer to the reflections seen in the placid pools of water. While the watery conditions were ideal for the amphibeous Frogs, the Squires are less adapted the the swampy conditions, and the grove was determined to be unfit for play. The Squires and the Frogs will attempt to match up on two later dates this summer. Reported by Rick Fuchs, May 15th, 2011 |

Frogs Club Undefeated at Ohio Cup
Columbus, OH - On the fifth of September, the Great Black Swamp Frog traveled to our state's capital to participate in the playing of the 18th Ohio Cup matches. Nineteen base ball clubs were well-represented at the annual festival, with teams traveling from seven different states and territories. The Frogs have made the annual pilgrimage for all eighteen of the festivals, a feat only the host Ohio Village Muffins can match. At the end of the day, the Frogs were able to exit the city holding their heads aloft, having won two matches and tying a third. The Frogs matched up well with the St. Louis Unions Base Ball Club of Missouri, and were fortunate to tally three aces in their final at-bat of the contest. The final tally was six aces for the Frogs against five aces for the Unions. The Frogs next matched up against the Perfectos of the same St. Louis, Missouri, and won an exciting affair, tallying the winning ace again in the final at-bat for a four to three outcome. The Frogs finished the afternoon of perambulatory pleasure, tying the Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mountain Stars with eight aces each. The Frogs were led by Brad "Doc" James, Craig "Cat" Stough, and newcomer Joel "Crash" Crozier, each reaching base safely five times on the afternoon. The three men also tallied a combined seven aces for the Frogs, with James receiving four of them. Chris "Peach" Pitman and Tyler "Junior" James also struck well for the Frogs, each reaching safely four times. The day was not without its tribulations, however, as Frog center fielder Cyrus "Cylcone" Sarosh fielded a well-struck fly off a Unions batsman with the result being a fractured finger. He was unavailable the rest of the afternoon. The Frogs will travel to Northville, Michigan, on the Friday evening of September the eighteenth to play the Eclipse Base Ball Club as part of Northville's annual Victorian Festival. Frogs' "Irregulars" Top Wily Wahoos
Toledo, OH - Despite fielding only seven regulars, the Great Black Swamp Frogs got back on the winning track on Sunday, July 25th, in a match agains the Wahoo Base Ball Club of Royal Oak, Michigan. Final tally - the Frogs recorded fifteen aces to the Wahoos' nine aces. A large and appreciative crowd of cranks was on hand to witness the Frogs' victory under threatening skies. The field was certainly tilted in the Frogs' favor (both literally and figuratively) as the Frogs played their annual match at the Toledo Lutheran Home, on a severely sloped playing surface. Fortunately, the workers had oxygen tanks available for the Frogs' players that had trouble running uphill toward home plate. The Frogs were led by Rick "Sparky" Fuchs, who reached the sacks five times, tallying a pair of aces. Jeremy "Professor" Potter and Brad "Streetcar" Pfeiffer each struck safely four times. The team used two irregulars to fill out the roster against the Wahoos, and both players admirably held their own against the club from Michigan. Cory "the Beast" James - the behind for the Frogs - made his Frogs' debut by striking safely twice and tallying an ace. Young Eric "Fleetfoot" Kutchenriter debuted for the Frogs at just ten years of age, but the right fielder played a strong match, striking safely once and making two fine plays in the field. The Frogs will now hop on the stagecoach and head to West Unity, Ohio, for a match against the West Unity Athletics on August the twenty-third. Unfortunately , the Actives proved to be too much for the Frogs on both days, as the Canadians defeated their sister city's team by 12-7 and 6-4 scores. He also tallied twice for the Frogs. Darius "Hoot" Sarosh Struck safely six times as well. He also tallied three times. "Read "Steamboat" Backus celebrated his 75th birthday by striking safely twice in each game. Squires
Break Out Heavy Timber, "Swamp" Frogs
Fremont, Ohio - On Saturday last, the Great Black Swamp Frog Base Ball Club of Sylvania, Ohio traveled southeast to match up against the Squires of Spiegel Grove. The playing conditions in Spiegel Grove should have been well-suited to the Frogs, as much of the playing field was a swampy mass. Unfortunately for the visitors, they did not play well enough in their surroundings, falling to the Squires by a score of 17 aces for the Frogs to 28 aces for the Squires. The Frogs started the match well, taking a lead of 9 aces to three before six hands for either side could be retired. However, the Squires were able to find the large assortment of trees in the outfield in latre innings, becoming very adept at placing their hits into these trees. The Frogs' struck well in the final three innings, but thier attempted rally proved to be futile. Cyrus "Cyclone" Sarosh crossed home plate four times for the Frogs, while striking safely five times. Chris "Peach" Pitman and Jeff "Boiler" Smith each struck safely five times, as well. A special thanks to Jay "Barnyard" Barnier for keeping the Frogs' tallies in the match. Frogs Send
Inmates To Defeat
Bowling Green, Ohio - On a splendid Sunday afternoon in the southern end of the Great Black Swamp, the Frogs' base ball club of Sylvania, Ohio, matched up against the Wood County Infirmary Inmates in the only competition of the season between the two clubs. The Frogs proved their mettle against their friends from the south, beating the Inmates by a score of nineteen to two. The ballists of Sylvania struck well all afternoon, and played a good defensive game to back up their striking prowess. Jeremy "Professor" Potter, Mike "Dutch" Holland and Matt "Flash" Meehan gave the Frogs an early lead in the contest, scoring three times in the first inning before three hands could be retired. A certain highlight for the Frogs was the third inning, as the strikers scored three runs with out the aid of a ball hit to the outfielders. As in the inaugural game of the season, Mr. Meehan struck well, reaching base safely four times and tallying four times, as well. Darius "Hoot" Sarosh, elder brother of Cyrus "Cyclone" Sarosh, made his first-ever appearance with the Frogs a grand one, reaching the sacks safely all five times in the game. Read "Steamboat" Backus started the game at the pitcher's plate, marking nineteen consecutive years of playing for the Frogs. He hurled well for the Frogs all game. The Great Black Swamp Frogs will next hitch up their wagons on the 30th of May to make the long trip to Fremont, where they will engage in what is sure to be a spirited match against the Spiegel Grove Squires.
