The
Frogs travelled to Columbus, Ohio to play in the Ohio Cup
Festival. The Frogs were scheduled for three matches against
teams from Michigan, New York, and Missouri. The first match of
the day proved to be a tough one, as the Rochester Grangers of Michigan
have a strong hitting team. Many Granger hits fell between Frogs'
fielders and went for extra bases. Although the Frogs played
hard, they lost by a score of 5 to 17. The Frogs quickly regrouped for their second match of the day, this time against the Greenville Rochesters from New York state. The Frogs' strikers hammered hit after hit en route to a 14 to 2 victory. Of special note, speed-challenged "Sparky" Fuchs scored an ace by stealing home on a muff by the Rochesters' behind. The Frogs' played their final match of the day on the Ohio Village Green against the St. Louis Perfectos. The Frogs again cruised to an early lead on the strength of their hitting, but the Perfectos mounted a furious comeback and nearly tied the score. The Frogs prevailed however, by a score of 10 to 8. "Iron Horse" Draa stole home on a muff by the Perfectos' behind, giving the Frogs' two steals of home on the same day! |

On
a perfect day for base ball,
the Great Black Swamp Frogs played a match against the Ohio Village
Muffins at Sauder Village in Archbold, Ohio. Although each team
played with only eight fielders, excellent defese kept the score close
until the Frogs exploded for 5 runs late in the game. The Frogs
held on to win by a final score of 7 to 1. |

The
Cincinnati Buckeyes traveled
to Sylvania for their first ever match against the Black Swamp
Frogs. A Buckeyes run in the top of the ninth proved to be the
tie-breaker, as the Frogs were unable to answer in the bottom of the
inning and fell 2 to 3. Craig "Cat" Stough had an excellent game
for the Frogs, with three hits and a diving catch of a foul ball behind
the home plate. This match will be televised at various times on BCSN during the month of August. |

the coveted Ohio Silver Ball Trophy for the first time in 2005 in a

The
Frogs opened the 13th annual
Sylvania Cup Tournament with a victory over the 2004 tournament
champions, the Eclipse Base Ball Club from Northville, Michigan, by a
score of 5 to 2. Mike "Silver" Smith delivered the most exciting
play in the match, scoring all the way from first on a two-base hit by
Mark Wagoner. The second match of the day saw the Frogs fall to the Akron Black Stockings, 0 to 3. The Black Stocking played excellent defense throughout the match, preventing the Frogs from scoring. In the third match, the Frogs squeezed past the Canal Fulton Mules, 3 to 2. After the matches, awards were handed out for the winners of the individual events, and the 2005 Sylvania Cup was awarded to the Akron Black Stockings. |

The

Woodstock, Ontario, to play a Canada Day match against the Woodstock
Actives. |

The
Frogs travelled to Dearborn,
Michigan to take on the Lah-De-Dahs at Greenfield Village. The
game started amidst much hooplah, with a brass band playing gaily as
they marched onto the field with the home team. In addition to
the judge, an announcer was present, and a reporter from the Detroit
Free Press roamed the sidelines. The Frogs struggled with the new-fangled rule practiced by the Lah-De-Dahs - balls must be caught on a fly to retire the striker (no one-bounce rule), and quickly found themselves trailing by a score of 13 to 2. The fifth inning saw the Frogs' fortunes turn, as they sent 21 strikers to the line and scored 15 aces. Trailing by 3 aces in the eight inning, the Lah-De-Dahs mounted a second charge and scored 8 aces, followed by 4 more in the ninth. The Frogs rallied for 2 acesin the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately fell by a score of 26 to 22. |

Rain
showers were unable to
dampen spirits as the Frogs started their 2005 season with matches at
Flower Hospital in Sylvania against the Woodstock Actives and the Ohio
Village Muffins. The Actives prevailed in the first match of the
day, as the rain and the Actives stellar defense quieted the Frogs
offense. The Actives sprayed hits all over the field during
their 7 to 1 victory over the Frogs. The skies cleared at the beginning of the second match, and the sunlight heated up the Frogs' bats. The Frogs defeated the Muffins by a score of 8 to 1. A three run homer by Scoop Montgomery proved to be the big blow in the match. The Actives prevailed over the Muffins in the final match of the day. |
