The Board
of the Sylvania Electronic Village (SEV) would like to inform all members
that the Sylvania Electronic Village will cease operations on August 1,
2013. This includes all email services
and website hosting. In 1995,
the World Wide Web was a very new phenomenon that enabled the spread of
information over the Internet through an easy-to-use, flexible format. However, in the early days of the Web,
connectivity for the public was not widespread. Realizing
the value of this new technology and the need for local, widespread access,
the City of Sylvania quickly responded with an initiative to bring low-cost
Internet and email service to residents.
The SEV was formed as a non-profit corporation in 1995. Originally funded by the City of Sylvania,
the mission of the SEV was to offer Internet services, keeping the Sylvania
community at the forefront of technology and thereby improve the quality of
life of its residents. The SEV accomplished
that mission long ago. With the explosive growth of the Internet over the
last 18 years, there are numerous land-based and wireless Internet providers
serving the Sylvania community. One of
the most difficult services to maintain has been the email service. Escalating costs associated with filtering tremendous
amounts of spam email now make the SEV system almost unworkable and very
expensive for a small, community-based organization and our service partner,
American Broadband and Telecommunications. But there
far more choices now than in 1995, including free, robust email services such
as Gmail, Yahoo! and Windows Live.
These email services can offer excellent spam and phishing protection,
virus scanning, mobile access, calendars and many other features. In an
effort to make the transition as smooth as possible, the SEV Board is providing
a lead time of nearly three at months for members to make the switch to other
providers. We ask only that you notify
the SEV once you have switched to a new service so that unused accounts can
be deleted and free up valuable hard disk space on the AMBT servers. Just drop me an email at mtansey@sev.org. The SEV
Board would like to thank you for your support over the years. It is our sincere hope that this transition
will cause very little inconvenience. The SEV board
would also like to thank Jeff Ansted, President of
American Broadband and Telecommunications, along with the entire AMBT staff, whose
support has allowed the Sylvania Electronic Village to continue as long as it
has. Sincerely, Mike
Tansey
